COPPER COUNTRY UNITED WAY
It's a fact of life there are always people in need:
- Families or individuals in crisis needing emergency assistance to provide the basics of life
- Young people or children needing mentors or guidance
- Disabled individuals needing training, support, and work
- Victims of violence needing help
- Individuals suffering from addiction illnesses needing counseling
. . . these situations and similar ones are the reason Copper Country United Way exists - to help those in need in our community get through difficult times.
CCUW helps by organizing and overseeing an annual campaign to collect donations. These donations are distributed to qualified local human services agencies in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties. Together we partner with these agencies in providing critical services to our community. And, in a community as small as ours, it is important to remember those needing help can easily be your neighbor down the street, your friends or coworkers, or even your own family members or yourself!
WHAT IS GIVEN HERE, STAYS HERE!
WHAT IS UNITED WAY?
United Way is the largest source of non-governmental funding for health and human services in the United States. No other charitable investment has made as large or as deep an impact in the lives of this country's communities as their local United Way chapters.
The Copper Country United Way (CCUW) was chartered in 1958. It is a local non-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of local residents. Although it is a member of United Way Worldwide headquartered in Washington, CCUW operates independently with the CCUW Board of Directors making policy and funding decisions that support our local community.
CCUW's motto is - and always has been - "What is given here, stays here" - all donations are used only to support the local services of our Partner Agencies.
Every United Way agency must meet the following high standards set forth by United Way Worldwide in order to assure integrity, quality, and effectiveness. Agencies must:
- be recognized by the IRS as a non-profit 501C3 organization
- be licensed to solicit in the State it is located
- be governed by a volunteer Board of Directors
- be audited annually by a CPA firm
- operate at a reasonable cost
Any agency which receives funds through a United Way agency, must follow a strict application procedure annually before receiving any funding. Those agencies which met these standards last year and received funding from CCUW are listed on our Partner Agencies page. Click here for more information on these agencies.
LOW OVERHEAD - ADDED VALUE
Because it uses a strong volunteer workforce in its Board membership along with the volunteer efforts of the internal campaign coordinators working for local businesses, CCUW operates at minimal costs and is able to raise funds affordably. This allows donated monies to go further in serving community needs and helps keep administrative and fundraising costs down for our Partner Agencies.
